Irmo native Lee Thompson Young dead of apparent suicide

LOS ANGELES, CA (RNN/WIS) - Midlands native Lee Thompson Young, best known as the lead character in the Disney Channel television series The Famous Jett Jackson, has died.

Police confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that the 29-year-old was found at approximately 9:45 PT, dead of an apparent suicide by gunshot.

According to TMZ, Young's landlord discovered his body in his Los Angeles home with a gunshot that may be self-inflicted.

Young was born and raised in the Midlands where he was named Irmo Middle School's "Student of the Year" and was honored with the Optimist Oratorical Scholarship.

A role as Martin Luther King at age 10 in a South Carolina production of "A Night of Stars and Dreams" helped get him track to become a star at a young age.

Before moving to New York City with his mother, the 2007 South Carolina African American Calendar honoree received early training at the Workshop Theatre, Richland County Public Library, University of South Carolina and Benedict College.

Young was currently starring as Boston police detective Barry Frost in the TNT drama Rizzoli & Isles.

"We're devastated by the news of the passing of Lee Thompson Young. Lee will be cherished and remembered by all who knew and loved him," Rizoli and Isles tweeted.

Rain Management Group released the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our long time client and friend, Lee Thompson Young. We send our deepest condolences and thoughts to his family and friends."

The rising star also co-starred in films such as: Akeelah and the Bee, Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story and Friday Night Lights.
