Work to repair Dixon soccer fields underway

Posted: Updated:

The Dixon Parks Board is picking up the pieces after an incident involving the mayor's husband that left their soccer fields unplayable.

It was never what the parks board had planned.

"It hasn't been done yet, but the works are to come in and completely kill everything on the field and start from scratch," said Donna Matheny with the Dixon Parks Board.

Volunteer equipment and man hours will be being used to repair the fields at Baker Park.
Neighbors say it was the mayor's husband, Jimmy Frederick, who tore up the field after the Webster County Youth Soccer League fought against a fee to use it.
Mayor Linda Frederick calls it a case of miscommunication.

"Miscommunication or not, he should have had enough sense to know this is not a new thing. This is not routine maintenance. They have never done anything to that field before," Matheny said.

Work got underway on the fields Friday, where the soccer league is set to begin in just a few weeks.

"We've got some good citizens that come together to do some repair. So, it looks like it's coming together well and hopefully they'll have it ready by the fall," said Webster County Sheriff Frankie Springfield.
A special prosecutor will be appointed to review the case involving the soccer fields and the charges already filed against the mayor's husband for allegedly hitting a man with his tractor.

The incidents have created big controversy in the small Kentucky town.
"It was bad that this had to happen, that it had to come to this," Matheny said.

"You know, it's going to take everybody working together to get this problem solved and move on. It's about working together," Sheriff Springfield said.

14 News contacted Mayor Linda Frederick and she says she's glad that repairs will be made and hopes the youth soccer league can play in Baker Park again soon.
