Ill. man killed by train was farmer checking crops

Posted: Updated:

TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a man who died while riding his all-terrain vehicle in south-central Illinois was an 81-year-old farmer trying to cross a railroad track ahead of an oncoming train.

Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey told The Effingham Daily News that Thomas Miller died Thursday near the small village of Teutopolis (too-TAHP'-uh-lihs). Guffey says the crash was probably an unfortunate accident.

He says Miller was riding the ATV just after 11 a.m. when he tried to cross the track near his home along to check crops. He was struck by an oncoming freight train and died minutes later.

The coroner said drivers who saw the crash said it appeared to be an accident, but the incident remains under investigation.
