Indiana library to house Iraqi memorabilia

An Indianapolis library is set to become the nation's only library housing a permanent art collection that pays homage to Iraq's long literary history.

The Herron Art Library at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has signed an agreement with an international coalition of artists and writers to preserve and showcase the collection. That exhibit will include more than 300 printed materials recalling a centuries-old literary center in Baghdad that was destroyed by a car bomb in 2007 during the Iraq war.

The literary center was a busy avenue of cafes and bookstores that served as a meeting place for generations of Middle Eastern writers and thinkers.

The Herron Art Library will sponsor three biennial conferences exploring the themes and implications of the collection.  The first symposium is set for November 2014.
