COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Oregon has them. So does Baylor. And Ole Miss. And Washington. And Indiana. And now add South Carolina to the list of college football teams taking a crack at the chrome helmet game.

Yes, the Gamecocks are joining the latest trend in college athletics: the shiny, metal-like, statement-making helmets that are more curiosity than anything.

The Gamecocks Equipment Department tweeted out a photo of the chrome helmet early Thursday morning.

You've seen the helmets pop up in the past few years and it's not exactly clear who started the trend, but Oregon has lead the way in these helmet designs, using them during their appearance in 2012's Rose Bowl.

However, it is not clear if the Gamecocks plan to use the chromedomes during the season. The equipment department tweeted out another photo of the team's traditional white helmet just minutes later.

"FYI we will be wearing our traditional white helmet this year," said the tweet. "'If it ain't broke don't fix it.'"
