A young boy is taken to the hospital after being hit by a car.

Evansville dispatch says it happened in the 800 block of Campbell Ave. around 10 Thursday morning. Officials say 12-year-old Oleg Lyashchuk was riding his bicycle when he was hit by the car.

Officials says the driver of the car, 81-year-old Leo B. Schultheis, told them he was driving east on Campbell when Oleg rode out onto the intersection. Schultheis says he was unable to stop in time and hit the boy with his car.

Deputies say Oleg was thrown several feet from his bike. He was taken to St. Mary's hospital by ambulance. He is listed in serious condition, but stable.

Schultheis was taken to the hospital for a drug and alcohol test, but deputies say they do not believe them to be a factor.
