POSEY CO., IN (WFIE) -

About a hundred people showed up Wednesday to discuss the future of the New Harmony Bridge.

The meeting was across the Wabash River in Crossville, Illinois.

The citizens for Harmony Way Bridge Committee wants to reopen the bridge as soon as possible by finding a government entity to take over the privately-owned bridge to make it eligible for state and federal funds.

The bridge closed in May of last year due to structural problems and the closure has impacted residents and businesses on both sides of the Wabash.

"We hope as the ball gets rolling. That we'll pick up steam and the citizenry will get behind us on both sides of the river to accomplish our goal, which is to get it reopened," said William Wilson, the committee chairman.

Chairman Wilson said after what he called a fact find mission, the town board of New Harmony could give serious consideration to taking ownership of the bridge.
