Officials warn of possibly harmful algae bloom in Bowling Green

Posted: Updated:

Officials are warning people about an algae bloom that could pose a hazard to those who visit Barren River Lake this weekend.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tells the Daily News that the lake near Bowling Green has blooming blue-green algae that can be harmful to small children, adults with immune illnesses and pets

Carlos Lopez, project manager for the corps, says the lake is still open, but recreational users should take precautions.

Visitors should not swallow water during swimming and avoid touching any visible algae.

Animals should not be allowed to swim in the water because the algae can get caught in their coats, and they can ingest it when licking.

Lopez cautions that fish caught in the lake should be properly skinned and cleaned before cooking.
