Police upgrade woman's assault charge after reviewing YouTube video

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Police have upgraded charges for a 36-year-old woman who was caught on video last week during an attack outside an apartment in North Charleston.

Officials with the North Charleston Police Department say Media Lavern Jones, of Goose Creek, has now been charged with second-degree assault by mob and drug possession.

Investigators say after reviewing video of the incident on YouTube and the extent of the assault, authorities upgraded Jones' charges, and her original charge of simple assault has been dropped.

Jones was booked into the Charleston County Detention Center Saturday for the second time in one week.  She was issued a $30,000 bond Sunday on charges of second-degree assault by mob and drug possession.  Police said Jones had two hydrocodone pills and no prescription at the time of her arrest.

She remained behind bars Monday. Earlier last week, Jones was arrested after the attack was caught on video.

On July 15 at 12:04 p.m., officers responded to an assault and battery that reportedly happened at a home on Garrett Avenue. The 20-year-old victim said she was sleeping at her home when Jones, who stays at the home with the victim, called her outside.

Police say when the victim went outside, Jones punched the victim in the face. According to the victim, Jones then pushed her to the ground and continued to hit the victim with "open hand and closed hand physical assaults."

The victim said she was able to get away from Jones, and get back inside her home.

A police report states when the victim did not see the suspect anymore, she called for a friend to pick her up and take her to a residence on Larry Street where she called police.

Authorities then responded to the apartment on Garrett Avenue and found Jones sitting outside of the home. She was arrested and taken to the Charleston County Detention Center, where she has since been released.

According to police, Jones initially said her name was "Monique Denise Jones," and told officers her birth date was Feb. 19, 1984. Investigators say once Lavern was transported to the Charleston County Detention Center authorities asked her if she had an alias to which Lavern responded that she had alias of Media.

Jones was then identified as Media Lavern Jones with a date of birth of Dec. 5, 1976.

Police say because Jones started an unprovoked physical attack which caused injuries to the victim, Jones was charged with assault and battery. Jones was also charged with giving false information to police.

A video which documents the alleged attack went viral in the Charleston area shortly after the incident on Monday.
