A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Fremont police say a body was found in a house on the 100 block of Morrison Street early Wednesday morning.
According to Police Chief Tim Wiersma, officers were unable to identify the victim as male or female. He says the body is not decomposed, but appears to be an adult. They say the body was discovered by a housemate.
Few other details about the victim are being released as an investigation into what they're calling a suspicious death continues. The body was sent to the Lucas County Coroner's Office for an autopsy.
Police know the occupants of the house, but don't know if the homeowner is related to the dead person.
Neighbor Joe Stegman, who lives just a few houses away from the crime scene, says he and the man he believes was killed were supposed to go fishing.
"Now I'll be fishing alone. It's sad."
Stegman says he moved from New York to Fremont to escape crime, but after the incident Wednesday morning, he no longer feels safe in his neighborhood.
"I've already talked to my landlord. We're going to move out of Fremont, guaranteed. I have four small children within a block of a crime like this. We're moving," said Stegman.
Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, says she saw several people going in and out of the home from her living room window across the street. She said the main resident was a man who appeared to be in his 30s. She said he sometimes sat out on his front porch, but mostly kept to himself.
Police will not release the victim's gender or identity until family members have been notified and an autopsy is complete.
