TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Tucson Police officer arrested for a felony crime has been terminated from the police department, officials say.

Kyle James McCartin has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault stemming from an incident at a gas station convenience store early Tuesday morning.

Rincon District deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at the Giant Gas Station in the 6800 block of E. Sunrise Drive just after 3 a.m.

According to a news release from the Pima County Sheriff's Department, two men wearing bullet-proof vests reportedly approached the gas station clerk. The clerk said they appeared to be intoxicated, and one of the men allegedly pulled out a gun during the transaction, the release said. The other man told him to put the gun away, but he pointed the gun at the clerk a second time, according to the release.

By the time deputies arrived, the men left on foot but were later located at a nearby apartment complex.

Detectives with the Sheriff's Robbery Assault unit took over the investigation and discovered that the suspect never demanded anything while pointing the gun at the clerk.

The clerk gave a detailed description of the suspect, who was later identified as McCartin, an off-duty Tucson Police Department officer.

McCartin, 23, has been booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.

The TPD Office of Internal Affairs investigated the incident, including a review by the chief of police.

McCartin has been terminated from the department.

He was hired in September of 2012 and was on probationary status with the department due to his tenure with the agency.
