UNION CO., KY (WFIE) -

Kentucky State Police say the body of Carter Nall has been located and recovered by investigators.

Around 11:00 p.m., search crews found the three year old in the Ohio River near Union County.

Investigators say Carter's body was found by a volunteer search party about 40 feet from where he was last seen. Officials say they saw whirlpools in the immediate area of the sandbar where Carter was playing. They say with large amounts of debris and fast moving currents, a whirlpool could have pulled Carter underneath.

"We did do an autopsy this morning and everything so far that the investigators have learned, it is nothing more than a tragic accident. Even though we don't have the medical examiner's official report yet, we suspect drowning is going to be the cause," said Corey King with Kentucky State Police.

Investigators also noted a substantial drop off in the area where Carter was last seen playing Sunday evening.

Several agencies were looking for Carter since he went missing Sunday evening.

KSP said they believed he was wearing a life jacket but took it off while playing on the sand bank. They say he was last seen near the boat on the river's edge between Caseyville and Dekoven.

Search and rescue efforts carried over from Sunday night, as officials say the clock hit 24 hours since Carter went missing along the river.

The Coast Guard also joined in the search. Officials say more than 20 other boats actively participated in the search effort.

Law enforcement with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife resources say the fast currents made the search difficult.

"There are some teams out here now using the old-fashioned draglines, but what these teams here are using is side scan sonar, that's what there concentrating with.  They also have two cadaver dog teams out now," said Scott McIntosh, with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Red Cross volunteers and the KCCRT were also at the scene providing support to first responders.

An investigation is still underway.
