Improvements coming along in Evansville's old courthouse

Posted: Updated:

Vanderburgh County Commissioner Joe Kiefer says the common area of the main floor has been repainted, the marble walls and floors have been cleaned, and some broken marble floor tiles are being replaced. He says plasterwork and wainscoting have also been repaired.

Kiefer says the restorations on the first floor are almost complete and cost around $200,000.

"It's going to be great for the community to have this old historic building renovated, to have some really nice appeal to it. It's going to be a great place to come visit, great place to host events, and that's what we're hoping for, people to come and enjoy the historic building that this is. It's a real community piece and we want the community to enjoy it," Kiefer says.

Next year, Kiefer hopes the county will tackle the second floor of the building and the third floor in 2015.

End rooms on the second floor have already been restored and can host events. Recently the city planted new trees around the courthouse building.
