Poseyville gets the go ahead for library expansion

Posted: Updated:

Posey County gets the go ahead for the Poseyville Library expansion.

Earlier this year, the city council approved $75,000 for the project.

With the state's approval, the Poseyville Carnegie Public Library jumps past its second hurdle to expanding. Library Director Heather McNabb says they've outgrown their current facility, but because it's a historic Carnegie building, more than a hundred years old, they want to expand, not rebuild.

That's what makes the property, on Locust Street just behind the library, a good fit. It will give them access on both sides of the both, including two street entrances.

But for now, they're in wait because they're hoping it will get listed as a foreclosure.

"The bank that owns it is not able to find the owners. They're not making payments, that sort of thing. So we're going to wait and see what the bank decides to do," McNabb said. "It will be a long process even if we get the property. To changing, we'll have to tear down the structure and do all that, but it's extremely exciting. I think it's something the community really needs."

With this expansion, McNabb says they hope to have space for more books, a new teen section and a private meeting room, because in the last few years, the library has seen its attendance and circulation numbers nearly triple.
