American Queen steamboat docks in Henderson

Posted: Updated:

The American Queen docked in Henderson Tuesday morning. It's the only steam-powered steamboat still in operation in the United States.

This is the first time this summer that the American Queen has made its way to Henderson. The steamboat started off in St. Louis on July 5.

It is cruising along the Ohio making stops in Cape Girardeau and Paducah, among other places, on it's way to Cincinnati.

The boat was originally scheduled to be on the Mississippi right now, but mother nature had other plans.

"The river was six feet too high at Hannibal, Missouri for us to be able to get underneath the bridges, so we diverted over to the Ohio. This will be two additional stops that we didn't originally have planned in Henderson this year," said Captain John Sutton.

The boat's passengers got to spend the day in Henderson.

We spoke with one couple who are from Ohio, and they say seeing the quaint river towns is a highlight for them.

"Because the people are so friendly. In the larger cities like St. Louis, which is very nice, but there's just so many people. We enjoy the small, because we're small town people," said Thurlie Knapp.

The steamboat is making an eight day trip. Its next stop is Louisville.
