Owensboro residents run to thank armed forces for their service

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - Some Owensboro residents aren't sleeping in for the holiday but are raising awareness for a very special group of people instead.

Registration for the Freedom Day 5K at Kentucky Wesleyan College's Winchester Center only runs for another hour.

This is the second year for the race.

It's being featured as a patriotic event to celebrate the contributions of our military servicemen and women.

Organizers say there were nearly 230 runners and walkers last year, and they're hoping for a similar turnout today.

Each participant gets a flag lapel pin and decal for the car.

According to organizers, all military recruiting branches have been given five complimentary entries, as well as local high school ROTC groups.

During the awards ceremony, there will be drawings for door prizes.

Some of those include framed patriotic prints that feature the service branches.

Awards will be handed out for several different categories and age groups.

If you'd still like to sign up, it costs 30 dollars.
