OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

A Daviess County veteran was honored for his service to our country on Tuesday as Independence Day approaches.

Philpot resident Joe Bill Millay was presented with seven service medals by Congressman Brett Guthrie. Some of those include the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

Millay served in the Vietnam War and also spent time in Korea.

He says he was surprised to see so many people at the ceremony that took place at VFW Post 696 on Veterans Boulevard.

"It means a whole lot for all the commissioners, and all of them to come out. It just scared me to death, but it means a whole lot that they care so much. It does," Millay said.

Millay adds that the honors are more about those who didn't get to come home, like his cousin who was the first person from Daviess County to die in the Vietnam War.
