Deputies: Victim fights off burglars, one suspect in custody

A Evansville man is facing several charges after police say he broke into another man's house and assaulted him.

On Wednesday night around 9:40, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at 1950 Belmar Lane regarding an assault.

When Deputies arrived, the suspects had already left the scene and the victim says three men broke down his from door and assaulted him. The victim stated he was able to fight off the attackers and they ran shortly after.

During the scuffle, the victim suffered a cut to his face and nose. He told deputies that he recognized one of the suspects as 37-year-old Leonard Schnitzler, of Evansville.

Deputies learned that Leonard was being treated at Deaconess Hospital for injuries he received during the attack. When he was released from the hospital, he was transported to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Command Post and was interviewed by detectives.

During the interview, Leonard admitted to being at the residence during the assault, but could not provide information on the victim being assaulted.

Leonard was transported to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Confinement Center where he is facing charges on:

 

  • Residential burglary, Class B Felony
  • Battery w/injury, Class A Misdemeanor
  • Intimidation, Class A Misdemeanor
The other two suspects have not been identified.
