Markey supporters celebrate in Western MA

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Ed Markey is headed back to Washington, DC, this time as a United States senator.

The 37-year veteran congressman beat Republican Gabriel Gomez Tuesday night in the special U.S. Senate election.

The Malden native took home 55 percent of the vote compared to Gomez's 45 percent.

He's going to take the seat John Kerry left to become secretary of state.

Markey thanked supporters from the Park Plaza hotel in Boston for their grassroots campaigning efforts.

"This victory belongs to you, it belongs to your families. I am deeply humbled and I am profoundly grateful, thank you so much."

The cheers in Boston were echoed in downtown Springfield Tuesday night as dozens cheered for the victory at the Black Pearl on Main Street in Springfield.

Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik was among the Western Mass supporters who's been pushing for Markey since he began campaigning five months ago.

"It's really good to have a Democrat with a proven track record, a progressive Democrat, in the Senate representing Massachusetts," Tautznik said.

Many of the supporters in Springfield Tuesday night knocked on doors, made phone calls and canvassed Western Mass to get the votes for Markey.

"I'm sure he and Congressman Neal and the other individuals there will definitely continue to bring the bacon to the western part of the state where it's certainly needed," said Markey campaign volunteer Bernard McClusky.

Supporters believe that Markey's 37 years in Congress will serve as a positive model for a career in the United States Senate.

"Clearly Ed's been out here. Ed is very well connected here and I think it brings us a voice," Tautznik said.

And Senator-elect Markey promised a packed crowd in Boston he will continue to bring a voice to the state.

"For every day I serve in the United States Senate that I have honored the vote and the work you did that makes it possible for me to stand here tonight as your next United States senator. God bless the state of Massachusetts, God bless the United States of America."

A timeline has not officially been set as to when Markey will take office alongside Sen. Elizabeth Warren, but it is expected within the next few weeks.
