Vince Gill ready to tee off at Victoria National

Despite the heat and the storms expected on Wednesday, golfers are still preparing for the United Leasing Championship Tournament.

Golfers have arrived for Wednesday's Pro-Am event at Victoria National. One of those players might be known more for his voice than his swing.

That's because not everyone knows he's a golfer. Many know Vince Gill as a country music superstar, but you might not know about his passion for the game of golf. He's in the Tri-State Tuesday night and tells 14 News that he's even thinking about making a bet with some of the pros.

Long before Vince Gill was picking a guitar, he was swinging a club. The country music legend first stepped onto a golf course at the age of five and it's been a huge part of his life ever since.

"I work at night. It works out perfect. Sing at night and goof off, play golf all day. It's a good life," Gill says.

Through his life, Gill has become buddies with some pros on the course. Wednesday, he'll take to the course with some of them at Victoria National.

"You get to go see how you stock up against some of the best players in the world," Gill says. "The beauty of music is there's no score. You don't have to turn in a score, you just sing a song and people cheer or boo."

Gill knows the hazards of playing Victoria National. He's an honorary member here and says from his experience, he knows what a difficult driving course this is. But just like any good golfer, he's a man with a plan.

"We'll play golf all day for a lot of money then when we're done we're going to have a singing contest for the same amount of money.  So, I think I'll break even with most of those cats," Gill says.

Until then, Gill is focusing on his main job, by taking time to do an little impromptu picking and singing with Bryan Hill, a man who used to perform in a country band himself.

Bryan Hill "I didn't even think I'd ever meet somebody like him in person," Hill says.

If you would like to watch Vince Gill go up against some of the pros on Wednesday, you can buy a day pass at Victoria National. He's set to tee off sometime after 7:00 a.m.
