LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A father carried out a murder-suicide just before the family planned to spend an afternoon at a pool, according to police.

Louisville Metro police said Gary Stewart, 40, shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Jillian Wood, 38, and his daughter Shelbi Stewart, 8, before shooting his 60-year-old mother who's in critical condition at University Hospital.

"My niece was so excited to go swimming," Jocelyn Wood said. Her sister and children have been living with Wood for the past two years.

Jocelyn Wood said the last thing she knew was her sister planned to take the family to Stewart's uncle's place to swim.

"They were trying to co-parent and be apart of the children's lives together," Wood said.

Around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, the family of four arrived to Stewart's home at the Lakeview Condominium complex, located on Gardiner Lane.

Stewart pulled out a gun just as Shelbi and her mother, Jillian Wood, were about to head to the pool.

"He said that he asked do you all want to die fast or do you want to die slow and my niece said I want to die fast," Jocelyn Wood said, who recounted what the boy and uncle told her.

Lt. Todd Kessinger, commander of the LMPD Homicide Unit, said Stewart's 12-year-old son and uncle were able to get away.

Kessinger said the murder-suicide was a premeditated domestic incident.

Wood and Shelbi Stewart died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. Gary Stewart died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A fund to help offset burial expenses has been set up at Fifth Third Bank locations. Ask to contribute to "In honor of Jillian Wood and Shelbi Stewart."
