(WMC-TV) - A former Memphis police officer is accused of forcing men to perform sexual acts in exchange for not arresting them on warrants.
Police say one alleged incident involved a man Brandon Berry pulled over in the area of Lamar Avenue and Semmes Street last January. The victim had an outstanding warrant and claims he was forced to perform a sex act on Berry in order to avoid a trip to jail.
It is unclear where the alleged sex acts occurred or whether it happened inside or outside the patrol car.
Details of former officer Berry's alleged crime offered some levity for his neighbors.
"He made Riverside look bad over here," said resident Richard White.
They expect more from an officer sworn to protect and serve.
"I seen him grow up as a baby – so I didn't think he'd do stuff like that," said neighbor Fely Harris.
Memphis police confirm Berry resigned from the force last month in the midst of its investigation. He was arrested Thursday morning following a grand jury indictment.
The indictment says Berry "did refrain from performing a duty that was imposed by law or that is clearly inherent in the nature of the public servants employment."
Berry faces up to six years in prison if convicted of official misconduct. He is free on bond.
