You have the chance to learn more about a local police force

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

In Owensboro, you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the police department and see what officers deal with every day.

This is a 12-week long class that meets at the Owensboro Police Department. It's happening on Thursdays from August 22 until November 7 from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M..

The Citizen's Police Academy is designed to give insight into the day-to-day operations of the department.

There are lots of course topics that participants will cover during their time in the program. Some of those include things like arrest and handcuffing procedures, officer safety, and dispatch codes and signals.

You'll also learn about the hiring process, training, and criminal investigations.

Members of the Owensboro Police Department will serve as instructors for the course.

Registration is currently open, but space is limited.

Authorities say they believe educating the community creates better communication between OPD and the people that it serves.
