Officials narrow down four possible locations for new medical school facility

Consultants for the Academic Health Science Campus planned for Evansville have narrowed the location to three possible sites.

The project is an expansion of the current IU School of Medicine in Evansville. It also involved University of Southern Indiana, University of Evansville and IVY Tech Southwest.

They're all working together to bring this project to one of three locations: Downtown Evansville, on the campus of USI, or one of two private lots of land near I-164 and the Lloyd; One of those is off Burkhardt and Virginia, the other is in Warrick County.

So far, lawmakers have pitched $2-million towards the planning of this project.

Catherine Zimmerman with the IU School of Medicine in Evansville says a final business plan could help determine where the facility will go.

"We are still assessing exactly how large the campus will be, so we can determine what the acreage necessary for the project will be," says Zimmerman. "Then that will determine really where the best location for the project will be."

Zimmerman says the project would also include four local hospitals to expand residency programs. Many in the city of Evansville are also looking into this project. A final decision on location could come in December of this year.
