Mt. Juliet cuts ribbon on first fire hall

MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

After years of planning, the residents and leaders of Mt. Juliet now have their own fire department. Fire Station 1, on Belinda Parkway, is the city's very first fire hall.

Dr. Sydney Payne moved to Mt. Juliet three years ago and said she made it a personal goal to help improve fire protection for the growing community.

"I started going to commission meetings. I was going to carry this until we got fire service and ambulance service, so this is a very special day," Payne said.

Mt. Juliet Mayor Ed Hagerty said this is the first time in nearly three decades that something has been done to improve fire protection in west Wilson County.

"This has been 27 years in the making, but it really all came together over the last two years," Hagerty said. "The community has embraced this 100 percent."

The mayor said the city commission put together a funding plan that allowed the city to pay for the new building in cash.

Station 1 is the first of two fire halls for Mt. Juliet. The other will be built on the south side of the city in 2016.
