14 News is learning more about the Evansville police officer who's up for dismissal from the force after an incident with a student.

That officer, Corporal Mike Winters, worked off-duty as an independent contractor for the EVSC and he's done so for several years. Winters is a 30 year veteran of the Evansville police force.

The fate of his job there will be decided by the Police Merit Commission after allegations that he grabbed a 16-year-old student's testicles while working at the Academy for Innovative Studies.
The student's grandmother says Officer Winters was inside a classroom talking with her grandson and five other boys when the incident happened.

"He wasn't really making a speech. My understanding is it was kind of a downtime. So, he was just talking with the kids. They were talking about fighting, how to get out of fights. So, it wasn't a class. It wasn't a demonstration,"  the student's grandmother Cheryl Snoke says.

School officials tell 14 News that Winters has been fired from his off-duty job at the EVSC. His hearing before the merit commission is set for July 15.
