A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Detroit Pistons have hired Maurice Cheeks as their new coach.

The person spoke Monday on the condition of anonymity because the move has not yet been announced by the team.

The Pistons fired Lawrence Frank in April, a day after they finished 29-53. Frank was 54-94 in two seasons with the Pistons.

Cheeks is the franchise's fourth coach in six seasons and his job will be to end its four-year postseason drought.
