SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan state senator wore an eye patch to address his colleagues while celebrating the passage of "Talk like a Pirate Day."

Republican Senator Roger Kahn's comments are becoming a big hit on YouTube, and the video is generating some buzz.

"Thank you matey, today, we have passed talk like a pirate day," said Kahn on the video.

Seagoing folks and landlubbers alike watched in Lansing this week as Kahn celebrated passage of an observation he pushed – "International talk like a Pirate Day." Now every September 19, Michiganders can talk like a pirate all they want.

Kahn says it celebrates Michigan's maritime heritage.  Democratic senator Gretchen Widmer, however, wasn't amused with the new state holiday. "I just want to thank the senator from the 32nd District for making the most compelling argument that he could for a part time legislature," said Widmer.

TV5 decided to have a conversation about this pirate-talk initiative to Kahn's constituents in Saginaw to get their thoughts on him pushing this in the state senate. The responses were mixed.

"I don't know why they'd really want to do that, to me it's just a waste of time," said one man.

"I don't have a problem with it," said a woman.

"We need a senator like that," said another man.

"I think we have a lot more pressing issues like "talk like a pirate day," like, do something with job creation, taxes [instead of this] foolishness," said a third man.

Kahn tells TV5 he gave a serious address to the senate earlier in the day that led to the passage of the $36 billion state spending plan, but nobody's reporting on that.

"I'm just kind of amused and befuddled that I've had no calls about that particular speech but I've had a lot of calls about ‘talk like a pirate day,'" said Kahn.

So would the senator retreat from his statement if he had it to do over again?  No way, he said. "I work for the people of Michigan, not the media of Michigan," said Kahn.

Kahn is currently serving his last term as a state senator. He's from Saginaw Township.
