LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – During a week when the Metro experienced some of the warmest days we've had in 2013,  Louisville Metro Police say four children were left home alone without food, running water, and electricity for days.

According to LMPD, their mother left them in an apartment on West Magazine Street while temperatures outside climbed near 90 degrees. That type of weather is hot for anyone, especially children.

"Children who can't fend for themselves," said LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell. "There was a tremendous amount of responsibility put on the 9-year-old."

Police say they arrested the mother, Jennifer Nunnally, 28, on Friday. Nunnally allegedly left her 2-year-old twins and 5 and 9-year-olds alone for three days. The oldest child told police she didn't know where her mother was.

"It's not okay," said Mitchell, "it's not how a normal household runs."

Officers say the children's aunt is the one who found the children. The news was shocking for neighbors on Magazine Street.

"I had no idea," said Lamont Reed. "I don't know them but, it's a bad situation."

Nunnally was in court on Monday to face her charges, she denied the allegations against her. The children's father was also present for the arraignment.

"Ma'am, all those charges is false," said the father.

"Okay, where did you get that baby that you have got with you," questioned the judge.

"That's my son," said the father.

"Is that her son," questioned the judge.

"Yes ma'am," said the father. "Her mother and them is here too."

Police say the children are now in a relative's custody. WAVE 3 News spoke with the children's aunt who didn't want to go on camera. She did say her sister has left the children alone before in the past but, this situation was blown out of proportion.

"I don't know how many stories we have to do to let people know this is not the thing to do when raising your kids and leaving them in danger," said Mitchell.

Fortunately, in this case the kids were not hurt. Nunnally is facing four counts of abandonment. She is being held on a $2,500 bond.
