Ill. gov to get online voter registration bill

Posted: Updated:

Illinois lawmakers have adopted a plan to allow registering to vote online.

The House voted 66-49 Thursday in favor of permitting registration through the Illinois State Board of Elections' website.

The idea was endorsed by Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in his State of the State address. He said in a statement it would save taxpayer money and make registration easier and more readily available for "everyday people."

The plan would require an applicant to use a driver's license and the last four digits of his Social Security number. The website would send the information to the voter's home county.

Sen. Don Harmon is an Oak Park Democrat who sponsored the legislation in the Senate. He says it's key to getting young people involved.

The bill is HB2418.
