Memorial Day observed aboard LST 325

Posted: Updated:

Memorial Day was observed aboard LST 325 on Evansville's riverfront.

The ship is a floating museum of World War II history. The landing ship tank carried troops
and cargo to beach heads in both the European and Pacific theatres of war. 167 LST's were built at the Evansville Shipyard.

90-year-old WWII veteran and LST tour guide Bob Cerling told visitors about the importance of these ship in the war effort.

"It celebrates the end of hostilities in many different wars and it celebrates, of course, those who lost their lives in it. The LST was the most critical ship in the war. Winston Churchill stated after the war that without the LST's, they never would have won the war," Cerling said.

Cerling said he saw lots of LST's during the war, but was never aboard one. He was stationed on the battleship Massachusetts.
