CLARK COUNTY, IN (WAVE) – A house was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon near Charlestown, IN, and neighbors were so sure people might be trapped inside, they broke down a door to try to make a rescue.

It turned out no one was home when the fire started shortly before 1 p.m. Monday in the 20200 block of Charlestown Bethlehem Road.

Harold Frame lives in the house next door and has owned both properties for 27 years. His daughter and her two adult sons lived in the house the burned.

Neighbors said they were so used to Frame's grandsons and their dog being home asleep during the day that they broke down a door. The men were attending a Memorial Day event when the fire started.

A firefighter was taken to a hospital for exposure after fighting the flames in the midday heat.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
