Indianapolis man dies when hit by squad car

Police say neither speed nor alcohol appear to have been a factor when a squad car struck and killed a pedestrian who had walked into traffic on an Indianapolis street.

The crash happened about 9:35 p.m. Thursday at an intersection on the city's northeast side. City police Officer Michael Hewitt says the squad car driven by Officer Jason Rauch wasn't on an emergency run and appeared to have had a green light at the intersection when 49-year-old Richard Moore of Indianapolis stepped from the curb and the patrolman wasn't able to avoid hitting him.

Police say toxicology tests on the police officer are not yet available. Police say Rauch has been with the department since 2008 and has not faced any disciplinary action.
