The Caze kitchen and cafeteria was still buzzing long after the school day was over. An army of pink bakers measured, mixed and made dozens and dozens of cupcakes.
Remember Paige Miller? She's eight, a third grader at Caze and the creator of Paige's Cupcakes for Cancer.
It all started last year with one simple goal.
"Help people with cancer," Paige simply said.
To do that, Paige is selling homemade cupcakes, $20 a dozen. The money goes to the Deaconess Foundation to help cancer patients.
"Cancer touches all of our lives. We've all lost people that we love to cancer, so I think that's what it's about," volunteer Sheila Bogard said.
If Paige was successful last year, raising $1,200, this time around there will be no stopping her.
"We've been bombarded with orders this year. We're over 120 now," Paige's dad, Mike Miller said.
That's why Paige and her family called in some reinforcements. At least two dozen Caze teachers and staff members volunteered their time to make sure no sweet tooth goes unsatisfied.
"It's a good cause and Paige is a wonderful student with a good idea, so I want to help her out," said Sandra Cheaney, a 2nd grade Caze teacher.
"It is amazing. Eight years old and to have that concept to be so giving, it's just beyond words," Bogard said.
It was a lot of work from creation to clean up, but for this crew it was time well spent to help a little girl with a big idea and an even bigger heart.
"I think it's a wonderful example for students, adults, everyone," Sandra said.
"Hopefully it's just a life lesson. It's really about helping other people and being a servant to the community and helping those less fortunate than we are," Mike said.
"I wish there were more kids in the world like Paige. That would be a good thing to help others," said Michelle Osborne, who ordered some cupcakes.
"Someone so small to grow into something so big, I mean, what her future holds is, who knows?" Bogard said.
This year Paige has been looking to double her total from last year with a goal of around $2,400.
It's not too late to order cupcakes or T-shirts. Go to the Paige's Cupcakes for Cancer Facebook page to help make a difference.
