OSHA investigating fatal recycling center explosion

GREENVILLE, KY (WFIE) -
We now know the name of the person who was killed in an accident barrel explosion at the Greenville Recycling Center II in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky.

The Muhlenberg Deputy Coroner says the man killed was 28-year-old Robert Adam Baxter of Greenville.

"Upon arrival it appeared that one of the employees was trying to remove the end out of a 55-gallon barrel and we really don't know what happened other than the barrel did explode and he was struck by part of the barrel," says Jerry Aders, the Greenville Fire Chief.

Evan Satterwhite, OSHA media representative, tells 14 News they are investigating whether or not to issue citations for violations.

He tells us the barrel that exploded was supposedly empty, but was labeled with some sort of label that said gasoline.  Satterwhite says there was enough fluid or vapors left over that they reacted with the plasma cutter Baxter was using.

Satterwhite says OSHA is investigating whether proper procedures were taken. He says the procedure should have been to cut a hole in the barrel with something other than a plasma cutter and rinse the barrel out.

He said the investigation can take several weeks

No other injuries were reported.
