PUTNAM COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -
New details have emerged surrounding the investigation into how the Romes brothers died after an Amber Alert was issued May 9. The two teens went missing last week, along with Michael Fay, who later led authorities to the bodies of Blake and Blaine Romes.
The call Michelle Grothause - mother of the Romes boys - made to a Putnam County Sheriff's dispatcher the day the three boys vanished has been released. The frantic call was made after Grothause walked into her home. During the call, she is so distraught she cannot catch her breath and is having trouble even coming up with correct information about the boys.
Grothause tells deputies her son was supposed to go on a trip to Washington D.C. with his school, but he never boarded the bus. She told deputies she kept calling his phone but he did not answer, so she went to the house to check on him. That is where she found the possible crime scene.
Grothause: We have three children that are missing.
Grothause: There's blood in my house, and there's a gun in my house. My car is missing.
Dispatch: Your Car is Missing?
Grothause: My car is missing.
She went on to tell deputies the gun did not belong to her, and that she believed the gun could be her roommate's ex-boyfriend's gun, which was kept in a storage unit.
This call prompted the Amber Alert, which then led to the finding of Grothause's car in Columbus, with Fay.
Fay has been charged with grand theft auto. No murder charges have been filed at this time. According to the Putnam County assistant prosecutor, more charges could be on the way. For now, Fay remains in the Wood County Detention Center.
