The Ferdinand Town Council has asked the local police chief to resign and Ted Beiker said he would leave his post as chief and remain on the force as an officer.
The head of the council said there were personal issues involved, but would not say what they were.
Several community members supported Beiker Tuesday night, saying there was no reason for the chief to step down.
"Our crime rate is very, very low. There were no arrests made this month. That tells me that my town is safe," said resident Don Farina. "I'm just really upset that the town board would get rid of a really excellent chief."
The Town Council says another officer on the force will become the interim chief until the council appoints a new chief.
