14 News has been told that the Union County girls' softball team is recovering after their bus overturned on Highway 60 in Livingston County on Friday evening.
We spoke with the head coach Nikki Conway who says many of the girls are back at school and that the team is anxious to get back out on the field.
Union County Schools spokesperson Malinda Beauchamp tells 14 News all but one of the girls are out of the hospital and that the final team member is expected to be released soon. Coach Conway says from the time of the accident, there has been an outpouring of support for the team.
"I heard an assistant coach say something like, 'Woah, woah,' and I happened to look up," says Conway.
That's when she realized something was wrong on the team's trip to play Livingston Central. She says seeing the bus headed for the side of the road was in a way, a relief.
"Because I knew we were going to stop," says Conway. "It was just a matter of, 'Oh here we go, hang on.'"
Conway tells 14 News even with her own injury, he first concern was making sure everyone was okay.
"There were some first responders there who got us out through the windshield," says Conway. "I was trying to evaluate the players to see who could wait a little while and who needed to be looked at first."
She tells us Livingston County brought coolers of water to the scene of the accident and team members visited the Union County players who were in the hospital.
Conway says everyone involved in that accident is blessed to be able to make a full recovery.
"They're ready to get back out there as soon as they can and try to finish out our season," says Conway. "Especially play for those who can't. We've got a few that are out the rest of the season just because of their injuries, but for the rest of them, they want to support them and show them how we don't quit. We're going to get back out there and play some ball."
Conway says that Monday's scheduled game has been canceled. No official word yet on Thursday's game.
