Drivers who use the Blue Bridge in Owensboro as part of their daily commute need to find a different route until the fall
The bridge officially closed early Monday morning so that crews can paint and clean it over the next six months.
Transportation officials say crews will also focus on additional maintenance and repair work.
Closing the bridge completely allows the process to be finished much sooner.
According to officials, over 8,000 vehicles use the blue bridge every day and about 15 percent of those are large trucks.
As the painting gets underway, crews are asking drivers to stay patient and use caution in the area while work is taking place.
Businesses in downtown Owensboro are also adjusting to the change.
Dominique Greathouse works on Second St. and is looking forward to November.
Dominique "You can see it from everywhere down here, and so when they finish it and make it look nice and pretty again, then it's gonna kind of finish off the Downtown Project, where they've been kind of cleaning it up and fixing everything up," said Greathouse.
Drivers who typically rely on the Blue Bridge are encouraged to use the Natcher Bridge as a detour.
