PERRY CO., IN (WFIE) -

Three men, who were arrested back in March after authorities say they tried to cash a fake check in Tell City are now facing federal charges.

Those men are 25-year-old Morris Miller and 26-year-old Jermario Baldwin, both of Charlotte, North Carolina, and 32-year-old Charles Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says all three suspects were federally indicted by an Evansville grand jury last week.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Shellenbarger says all three men face counts of conspiracy to cash a fake check, possession of a fake check, and conspiracy to commit bank fraud. The total maximum sentencing for all three charges is 45 years.

Hogsett also says that counterfeiting is a growing problem in the Tri-State and that the secret service is continuing to investigate in this case, as it is possible the suspects cashed numerous checks in multiple states.

"This kind of conduct may have occurred prior to their arrest in Tell City. As a result, the indictments returned do not represent the end of the investigation. In fact, in many respects, it really signals the beginning of an investigation about their whereabouts and their activities prior to their apprehension and arrest in Tell City," Hogsett says.

So far, we only know that these men attempted to cash fake checks at a bank in Cloverport, Kentucky and at the German American Bank in downtown Tell City.

Also, Shellenbarger says the suspects have already made an initial appearance in court, but a follow-up court date has not yet been set.
