High crash-rate intersection to get new turn lanes

Posted: Updated:

New turn lanes will soon be installed at the intersection of Weinbach and Washington Avenue in Evansville.

City Engineer Pat Keepes tells 14 News that this intersection is one of the top five to ten high crash rate intersections in the city.

He says the $1.1 million project will be funded 90 percent by federal highway funds and 10 percent local funds.

Keepes says most of the existing pavement will be removed, the street widened. New sidewalks, curbs and signals will be also put in.

The project will be done in phases to minimize the inconvenience to drivers.

"It will eliminate the need for individuals to have to try and look around on-coming traffic. After the construction of these improvements, we expect that crash rate will be reduced significantly," Keepes says.

Construction is set to begin summer 2014 and should take about nine months to complete.
