Local Patriot Guard riding to remember

Posted: Updated:

For six years, local Indiana Patriot Guard riders have honored the sacrifice of fallen soldiers in a unique way.

They call it their Ride to Remember and it's taking place this month.

The first stop for the Patriot Guard on May 18 is Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery on St. George Road where Corporal Willard Powell is buried.

The Patriot Guard will visit the graves of 16 fallen soldiers on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19.

Members say they are invited by families to attend funeral. During those funerals, they make a promise to honor the soldiers' sacrifice. The Ride to Remember is part of the fulfillment of that promise.

Members are inviting anyone who is interested to come. You don't have to have served to come.

"If people feel as thought they want to support the families, they'd like to pay their respects, families look out and they say, 'There's a lot of people who still care,'" says Rick Williams of the Patriot Guard. "It's not exactly like a funeral, that kind of somber. Because a lot of times families know us pretty well and there's some joy.
