Pregnant woman killed, 2 others critically hurt in I-71 crash

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A pregnant woman was killed and two other people suffered critical injuries in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 71 during the Monday morning rush hour.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, Latonya Hunt, 31, of Sidon, Mississippi, died of multiple blunt force injuries. She was pronounced dead at 9:27 a.m. at University of Louisville Hospital. Hunt was 27 weeks pregnant. The baby died as well.

The accident happened around 8:25 a.m. on southbound I-71 just north of the Gene Snyder Freeway/I-265 exchange. Officer Donney Smith, a fatal accident investigator with the Louisville Metro Police, said the driver overcorrected to avoid a semi-truck, lost control of the vehicle. Smith said the vehicle flipped three times and struck a tree.

According to Smith, Hunt was lying across the back seat of the vehicle sleeping and was not wearing a seatbelt. She was ejected from the vehicle. The other two people were trapped inside the car until emergency crews arrived and were able to free them.

The names of the injured have not been released.

An investigator on the scene said the vehicle had been traveling at 72 miles-per-hour in a 65 MPH zone.
