LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man arrested at Churchill Downs on Thursday failed to go through screening procedures and threatened patrons on Millionaires Row, claiming he had a gun, according to an arrest report. Louisville Metro Police and a Churchill Downs spokesperson said no gun was found.
The arrest report states James A. Young, 44, of Louisville headed for Millionaires Row after entering Churchill Downs property without a ticket and without going through security procedures. The report also states that Young sat at a table on Millionaires Row and made threats concerning a gun. Police said Young was asked to leave by a track security guard, became belligerent and refused to comply. He then took a swing, according to the report, and began to fight with the security guard.
Darren Rogers, Senior Director of Communications and Media Services for Churchill Downs, disputed part of the police report on Friday. Rogers said Young did have a ticket. Rogers also indicated that there was no security breach and no altercation on Millionaires Row.
"Of course our people responded immediately," Rogers said. "Of course there was no gun found. The man appeared off kilter and was escorted out."
Young was arrested just before 8 a.m. Thursday. He is charged with terroristic threatening, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.
He was lodged at Metro Corrections and will be arraigned Monday morning.
