Students in Evansville Central High School's Family and Consumer Science class got a lesson in chicken nuggets today.
Karen Simon is teaching her students about the processing that is used to make commercial foods like chicken nuggets. The lesson includes a nutritional comparison of fast food and frozen nuggets to the ones you can make at home.
Students take the raw, unprocessed chicken breasts, cut them up then dip them in breading, sauces, and spices and then bake them.
"Our nation has alarming obesity levels," says Simon. "We live in a fast-paced society. A lot of people to fast foods and they're just so unhealthy for you. I wanted the students to see how manufactured food is made and they were really appalled."
Some of the students like the homemade nuggets so much, they say they'll make them at home.
