Officer involved shooting claims life of Vincennes man

VINCENNES, IN (WFIE) - A Vincennes man is dead, following an incident with the Knox County Sheriff's Office and Vincennes City Police. It happened around 10 P.M. on Monday night, at 215 Wilbur Street in Vincennes.

Officers say a Knox County Deputy was flagged down by a friend of 42-year-old Ross Darkis of Vincennes. Friends of his say he argued with his girlfriend earlier in the evening and was very upset.

Police say he was intoxicated and holding a handgun on his front porch on Wilbur Street.

According to law enforcement, Darkis refused to surrender his weapon. Other officers on scene tried a taser and other non-life threatening measures to diffuse the situation.

Police say that's when Darkis raised his gun toward the officers. We're told several officers then fired their weapons.

Law enforcement officials say Darkis was struck multiple times, and was pronounced dead minutes later at Good Samaritan Hospital.

The identity of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
