Eagle Scout helping New Harmony be prepared with new helipad

A Posey County Eagle Scout has helped make sure the community of New Harmony is properly prepared for emergencies.

An air evac helipad was dedicated Sunday afternoon at the New Harmony Fire Station. 17-year-old Shawn Burks said the helipad was his Eagle Scout project.

New Harmony Fire Chief Scott Miller said the community was in need of a permanent landing zone for medical helicopters.

Miller told 14 News that the landing pad was funded through a Posey County Community ... Foundation Grant.

He says with few landing zones in the area, this will help New Harmony be better equipped to handle emergency situations.

"We've talked about it in the past about making one and I thought it'd be a good project to do," Burks said to 14 News.

"Transporting from Illinois back to Evansville and vice-versa. This also becomes a nice area for them to sit down if they run into inclement weather or anything," Miller said.

Shawn says Sunday was also the day of his Eagle Scout ceremony.
