Daniels leads anti-racism rally on Purdue campus

Posted: Updated:

Purdue University President Mitch Daniels says it's time for the entire school community to work together to fight bigotry on the West Lafayette campus.

Daniels addressed students, faculty, staff and others who participated in an anti-racism rally outside his office Friday.

FBI statistics rank Purdue second in the nation among public and private universities for the number of reported hate crimes. Those rankings are not objective, however, because reporting of hate crimes by universities is inconsistent.

Daniels says the views expressed at the rally are widely shared on campus and it's time to work together against intolerance.

The Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/15Nabg7 ) fewer people attended Friday's rally than one held Monday.

Purdue police are investigating the defacing of a protest sign from Monday's rally with a racial slur.
