Newburgh residents concerning over new one-way road

Newburgh is in the process of reversing a town council decision saying they've taken nothing but complaints since they changed some street traffic downtown.

For months now, traffic on Monroe Street has been routed one-way heading south toward the Riverfront. It's just one block between Jennings Street and Water Street.

It was changed because the road is so narrow and there were some problems with congestion and also safety concerns with pedestrians. Newburgh's Town Manager says despite the signs indicating the changes just hasn't worked out.

"When Castle had their prom, we have so many visitors down here," says Lori Buehlman. "We had two police officers doing traffic control at the corner of Water and Monroe. Even with the two police officers standing there, we had a number of cars turning north. I think that was the turning point when the council decided we need to take a second look at this."

They'll have a final vote at the next town council meeting to change it back to a two-way street and then they'll look to restricting parking to help alleviate some of that congestion.
