Indianapolis' new professional soccer team is honoring the state's Civil War history with its name.

Team owner Ersal Ozdemir announced Thursday that the team will be known as the Indy Eleven and wear red, white and navy blue.

The Indianapolis Business Journal and WRTV report the name pays tribute to Indiana's 11th Regiment in the Civil War. The regiment was led by Indiana native Col. Lew Wallace, who later wrote "Ben Hur."

The team's crest features the Victory statue that adorns Monument Circle.

The Indy Eleven will compete in the North American Soccer League beginning in April 2014. The league is the top feeder league to Major League Soccer.
